Speaking during Liverpool’s press conference, Klopp said: ‘Jota will be out for a long time, we talk about months. We will see – I don’t want to put a number on it because I hope there is a positive moment in rehab, but it will be long.’

When asked how Jota was coping emotionally, Klopp said: ‘It’s Diogo and he’s surprisingly OK, so far. Smart size and reflective. He knew when we carried him off the pitch when we came out on the pitch. He explained what happened and he knew it was a serious one and impactful for his World Cup dreams. ‘

Klopp went on to explain how the injury would rule Jota out of the World Cup. He said: ‘Jota will miss the World Cup, really serious injury in the calf and we have to recover him. The process starts and that’s it. Very sad news for the boy, for us and Portugal.’

Jota sustained the injury during Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Jota looked in immense discomfort after trying to flick the ball forward as Liverpool sought to add another goal late on against their Premier League rivals.

The 25-year-old quickly received medical attention on his left leg as Jota’s teammates cut worried figures with it soon evident that the winger would have to be removed from play.

He has made 29 appearances for the national team, scoring 10 goals, and starting the previous five fixtures for Portugal.
